How to change movie name and other metadata in .avi, .mp4, .mkv files

I’ve tried to watch some downloaded movies using DLNA server software, but some video titles had duplicate names or unreadable characters. It appered that these video files had problems with the Movie Name metadata.

Tried right-clicking on the file, selecting Properties and removing personal information, but nothing was changed.

Also tried to edit metadata using Windows Media Player (WMP). Sometines WMP worked just fine, but in many cases it wasn’t working properly.

I had much better luck using freeware VLC Media Player. If you open a video file with it and select Tools -> Media information, you can change the video title and other metadata. Sometimes I enter my own video title, sometimes just remove everything from the field. In the latter case my TV shows file names instead of the metadata.
